Courier and truck drivers are feeling abandoned by the Government's latest overhaul of the transport system.

The Government has announced plans to increase funding for public transport by six per cent, while slashing state highway funding by 11 per cent.

Fuel taxes are set to rise nine to 12 cents per litre, with an additional regional fuel tax in Auckland.

Simon Reid from the Road Transport Association told Mike Hosking the Government doesn't seem to understand what his sector needs.

"I know they don't like roads that's why they fly everywhere and bump people off planes to get their seats, perhaps they need to drive in a truck to get where they are going."

Meanwhile, there are claims median barriers could make some of our most deadliest roads even more dangerous.

The Government is looking to install more median barriers on highways, in an effort to curb the country's rising road toll.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says barriers have been shown to reduce deadly head-on collisions.

But road safety investigator Hamish Piercy told Mike Hosking they can also create hazards for cyclists and motorcyclists.

"I know there's an example on the Kapiti Coast where a wire barrier has been used, but motorcyclists and other users suffer."
