The Opposition has beaten the Government to it.

Simon Bridges has announced his National caucus reshuffle, after Amy Adams and Alastair Scott announced yesterday they'd be standing down at the 2020 election.

Among changes, Paul Goldsmith picks up the vacant finance spokesperson role, Judith Collins loses infrastructure and Chris Bishop leapfrogs several colleagues for a spot in National's shadow Cabinet.

Bridges told Mike Hosking Goldsmith and Bishop are proven performers but that wasn't his only consideration.

"You get in and you do the work, that gets rewarded. Of course, I am trying out some new talent, and I think that';s the way it should work in a fully functioning caucus that's taking it to a Government."

He says that he did try to talk Adams out of the resignation as she is a friend, but he says that he understands why she leaves.

Bridges did not address questions that Adams left because she was unhappy with National's performance.

He says there are no other resignations he's aware of, but that it is always a possibility.

"You never know. I wouldn't be surprised because stuff happens and you have a massive caucus."

Jacinda Ardern will announce her own Cabinet reshuffle tomorrow.
