Some teachers are using their pupils to fluff up their social media pages, exposing a blind spot in privacy rules.

The Privacy Commissioner says some young teachers who have grown up using social media, won't think twice before putting something online.

Child Forum CEO Sarah Alexander told Mike Yardley there aren't any clear rules at the moment, so they want teachers' phones to be banned from the classroom.

"In early childhood education, there is actually no need for personal devices to be used for recording children. We generally recommend services provide the cameras, and the service has control of the use of the images."

NZEI president Lynda Stuart says in most cases schools have social media guidelines.

She says it's important for schools and early learning centres to have conversations with not only teachers and staff.

"It's actually the wider community knowing how to deal with digital technology, how we treat online usage, and how we teach children to be cyber smart themselves."
