The Defence Force says it feels squeezed and not welcome at bases around the country.
Minister Ron Mark has launched a review of Defence Force bases.
He is highlighting the action of a housing developer who's lodged a complaint with the Environment Court over the noise from the airforce testing its engines at the Whenuapai base in West Auckland.
Mark told Mike Yardley similar "nimbyism" forced Wigram in Christchurch to close, and people are also objecting to the noise from the rifle range near Burnham.
He says in Palmerston North councillors have passed a resolution debarring activities from anyone who doesn't "suit them".
He says the council targeted the defence industry in a proposal allowing venue managers to reject events that might make the city look bad.
“If they don't want the jobs the Defence Force creates, I have told the mayor I am quite open to relocating Linton Military Camp to Waiouru.”
