Gender pay gap issue hits NZ Cricket

Former Black Cap Peter McGlashan has pointed out the wage difference in domestic cricket following a Twenty20 double header in Auckland yesterday.

McGlashan claims Aces and former New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan was paid $575 for his match, while White Ferns and Wellington star Sophie Devine was paid $55.

In October NZC spokesman Richard Boock said the organisation was in the preliminary stages of setting up terms of reference for the new women's MoU, which was likely to cover all professional women's cricket in New Zealand "and usher in an exciting new era for women's cricket in general".

He told Mike Hosking that although many pundits had the view women should be paid the same amount as men when they generate as much revenue, it was a more complicated issue than that.

"All women's domestic sport in the country is amateur. What we have been trying to do to improve our position is better the profile of women's cricket by running the Super Smash competition."

We are investing more in women's cricket and trying to develop our international programme and make sure there is a pathway in our domestic league."

Booker says there is no simple solution to the problem, but maintains the female cricketers have not complained or threatened action, with many thankful to be given the chance to play in competitions which didn't even exist only a few years ago.

"This is a complex situation. The players are very accommodating of the situation and have been noticing the improvements. None of them are saying we are no longer going to play if we don't get a pay increase."
