Donald Trump’s approval rating has plunged to 36 percent in the latest national poll.

Mr Trump's overall approval rating was down from 42 per cent in April.

It's put Mr Trump’s six-month approval rating at a historic 70-year low for a president, amid mounting controversy over Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Correspondent Richard Arnold told Larry Williams six in 10 Americans think Russia tried to influence the last US presidential campaign.

"It's surprising it's not more. There is also doubt about how President Trump deals in the international arena. Half those polls says the American leadership has grown weaker under Trump. The poll also raises concerns about Trump's inability to get much done."

The poll, done by Washington Post-ABC News, shows Mr Trump's disapproval rating has risen five points to 58 percent.

Overall, 48 per cent say they "disapprove strongly" of the current US president's performance in office.

The fresh survey indicates that nearly half of all Americans (48 percent) see the country's leadership in the world as weaker since Trump was inaugurated in January, compared with 27 percent who say it is stronger.

A total of 50 percent of Americans say the 45th US president is doing a worse job than most past presidents, while just under 25 percent say he is doing better than his predecessors.
