We're quickly switching to electric cars but our national grid might not be able to handle it.

Drive Electric says the rapid uptake of electric vehicles could put unexpected pressure on our electricity network.

One percent of cars on our roads are electric - and that number's set to rise as people become more environmentally conscious.

Powerco commercial manager Eric Pellicer told Larry Williams power companies need to find solutions to the problems electric cars pose.

"When someone buys an electric vehicle, brings it home and plugs it in, it increases their peak usage in their homes, potentially doubling or even tripling their evening peak."
