The Privacy Commissioner says the Ministry of Culture and Heritage cyber security breach isn't indicative of a wider problem.

Details of crucial documents, likes passports and licences, belonging to hundreds of young people have been exposed.

John Edwards told Mike Hosking the public sector does care about privacy, and there's a high level of technical skill on digital platforms.

"This one I think was a one-off after using a third party provider to grab information for a particular promotion."

He says that the incident is a serious lesson for the Ministry.

"You would expect a bit of due diligence to ensure that they had adequate security across the system they were going to use."
