Questions are being asked about what prompted a trio of National MPs to jump ship.

The latest three to announce they won't stand in the September 19 election are Sarah Dowie, Nicky Wagner and David Carter.

Dowie is the only real surprise, as she'd been selected unopposed in her safe Invercargill seat.

Labour's Stuart Nash told Mike Hosking you don't quit politics, six months out from an election if you think your party's going to win.

"Sarah Dowie would've been a cabinet minister under a National government.

"She has figured out National are not going to win the election. She she doesn't want to do another 3 years in opposition so she's bailing."

National MP Mark Mitchell told Mike Hosking changes occur during every election cycle.

"Simon Bridges has a caution which is united, unlike Labour, who hang on until their knuckles are white."
