Wet weather is ravaging the Coromandel and the public are being urged to avoid all non-essential travel.
Parts of Hikuai are underwater and boats are being blown to shore.
Philip Duncan from WeatherWatch says the weather is a tel of two islands.
"The south island got mostly dry, sunny weekend but today the clouds are building though.
"The North Island covered in cloud from Northland to Wellington.
"Around Coromandel, Bay of Plenty that area today is going to have some pretty heavy downpours."
Meanwhile, Mr Duncan says areas in drought unfortunately will remain there despite the wet weather.,
"We need more than a months worth of rain, at least two or three times, to make up for what we're missing out on over the last 16 months."
