National says the responsibility for any dodgy conduct involving donations would lie solely with Jami-Lee Ross.

Ross is expected to go to police today, with what he considers to be evidence of Simon Bridges' donation fraud.

He claimed Bridges asked him to collect a $100,000 donation from businessman Yikun Zhang in May which was then split into smaller amounts to hide it.

National Deputy Leader Paula Bennett told Mike Hosking the party is looking into the claims.

"We're trying to look through that, we are not exactly sure what Jami-Lee Ross is talking about, we can't find a donation like that at the moment but we do need to do some digging and there hasn't been much time."

"It sounds like he's taken a donation and I'm not sure what he's done with it."
However, she said she is very concerned for Ross if he did take the donation.

"It sounds like he's taken the donation and I'm not sure what he's done with it and look he knows the electoral law very well, he is used to fundraising and getting big money."

She said if Ross has filed donations inappropriately National can't be responsible for that.

"Simon has not filed any false electoral donations."

Bennett said nobody saw this coming despite working with him for years.

"I've worked with this guy for seven years and, in all accounts, he was top-ranked and yet now we learn there is all this deceitful leaking going on, disloyalty to the party. It's gut-wrenching, to be honest."

"It's a complete and utter shock. He was a trusted confidant, he was a colleague. It's hard to comprehend, to be honest, at times."

She said Ross will lose the byelection.

"This is someone who has just shown so much insane disloyalty that he needs to really look at his own image."
