Waitangi commemorations are expected to be peaceful this year, though questions are likely to still be asked.

The Government and other political parties have been welcomed onto the marae at the upper Treaty grounds this morning.

It’s the most political day of the week, and with an election just months away, Ardern will be challenged on whether the Government’s kept its promises to Maori.

AUT historian Paul Moon told Mike Hosking there's unlikely to be much activism.

"Who knows - maybe this is the start of a National Day for everyone where we move away from what its been like in recent decades into something perhaps a bit more constructive."

However, Moon says questions will be asked about the Government's so-called year of delivery, as he says the Government over-promised in its first year in office.

"There may be some expectation from certain corners saying, where is the delivery part of this? You said we're going to have a transformational government and so forth, we haven't seen much from this yet."

At her first Waitangi as Prime Minister in 2018, Ardern asked Maori to hold her to account. The Government's actions around water, Whanau Ora and Oranga Tamariki are likely to be hotly discussed.
