An NCEA level one revamp is being supported by principals.
The Ministry of Education has proposed a number of changes to the year 11 curriculum, after the Government gave the green-light for a "comprehensive review".
The changes are expected to make level one broader, keeping students' options more open.
John Paul College principal Patrick Walsh told Mike Hosking it gives students more time to specialise in a subject area.
"I think keeping level one is a good idea because it provides good scaffolding for students moving into level two."
