Long wait times for surgery are having an impact on patients' mental and physical wellbeing.

Last year more than 3000 patients across 15 DHBs slipped through the cracks and weren't treated within the required timeframe.

Former New Zealander of the Year, Dr Lance O'Sullivan, told Mike Hosking the ongoing industrial action involving resident doctors is causing delays for surgeries.

He said that's having a huge impact on patients.

"I've had a problem with a lovely 85-year-old lady who has such severe hip arthritis that she's got depressed and lost 5kg, and she lives on her own and she can't get out of bed."

Where to get help:

If you are worried about your or someone else's mental health, the best place to get help is your GP or local mental health provider. However, if you or someone else is in danger or endangering others, call police immediately on 111.
