The Sunwolves are reportedly facing the axe from Super Rugby.

A report out of Australia suggests SANZAAR – the body which operates Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship – will soon be announcing their decision to drop the only Asian-based franchise in the competition.

Radio Sport rugby commentator Nigel Yalden told Mike Hosking it's a very messy situation which should have been handled more professionally by the governing body.

"In typical SANZAAR fashion, the news was broken by a couple of journalists. They are always reactive instead of proactive.  SANZAAR have announced a press conference on Friday to tell us everything we already know, which isn't really good enough."

Yalden says the international game is undergoing dramatic changes, with many of the decisions being made in the best interests for the United Kingdom and Europe.

"The divide in World Rugby is growing further and further. You have Europe and the United Kingdom against the rest of the world.

"Japan is treated as a southern hemisphere nation because of where they are being so far away from many rugby playing nations. They have been put in a difficult place."

Japan will host the Rugby World Cup in September and will join the Rugby Championship, along with Fiji, under World Rugby's proposed Nations Championship competition.
