Lonely Planet has named Tamaki Makaurau the number one city to visit in 2022 - citing its diversity in landscape, experiences and population. 

It says Auckland has what international tourists are looking for; listing highlights such as West Coast beaches, the Hauraki Gulf and the Auckland War Memorial Museum. 

Tourism body Auckland Unlimited Chief Executive Nick Hill told Mike Hosking it's a real shot in the arm. 

He says Lonely Planet is one of the world's most reputable travel commentary outfits. 

“It carries quite a bit of weight internationally so, we’re thrilled.”
