Police are urging gun owners to continue to return their firearms, or face the consequences.
The Council of Licensed Firearms Owners has suggested members should hold on to their banned guns until more options are available, and better compensation is offered.
But Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Clement told Mike Hosking although they are welcoming feedback on the process, the responsibility still rests on gun owners.
He says if people don't surrender their weapons, there will be problems.
"If they do the right thing, we will have a good proportion of the firearms by then."
