It's still unclear where the Government will draw the line on what restrictions to apply, and where, this Christmas.

The whole country will move to the traffic light system about the end of the month.

Auckland's border will then open from December 15, to anyone who is fully vaccinated or has a negative Covid test.

Areas with a high vaccination rate and low case numbers will move to the Orange Level, with masks and vaccine certificates still required.

Transport Minister Michael Wood told Mike Hosking higher-risk areas like Auckland will move to Red Level, with gathering limits and social distancing rules in place.

“Those will be decisions that are made by Cabinet, in the same way we have made decisions about Alert Levels and other things that we bring in place over the last year or so that have kept New Zealanders safe. We’ll base that on the public health advice that we receive.”
