A journalist blacklisted by Fiji says he doesn't know what to make of the lifting of the ban on foreign journalists.

The Fijian Government has announced any journalist is free to visit the country and report without restriction - so long as they're accredited by the Department of Information.

Fiji banned journalists because it claimed they were crossing the line from journalism to political advocacy.

Pacific specialist Michael Field told Mike Hosking he was banned for covering Fijian politics without censorship.

"It's a curious thing to do, and it should be noted that the domestic media in Fiji is still governed by military decrees, so I don't know what it all means.

"Maybe today they'll make it clearer, because buried in the statement was a reference to having to check in with the Ministry of Information, and we've never had to do this before."
