Egg producers are getting behind a scheme that allows consumers to trace eggs back to the farm they come from.

The Egg Producers Federation has brought in the traceability programme that will stamp a code on each egg.

And although the stamping programme is voluntary, more than 70 percent of those involved in egg production have signed up.

Egg Producers Federation executive director Michael Brooks told Mike Hosking the stamps will identify the farming system.

"So, FR for Free Range, and BN for barn, and then a dedicated ID number for each individual farm."

Brooks says producers will have to pay for stamping equipment ranging from one thousand to nine thousand dollars.

He says it's what consumers want.

"With these eggs that aren't stamped, I'm not saying they can't be trusted, they just don't have the layers of authenticity or the independent verification that our scheme will have."
