While more studies have been commissioned about the government potentially moving the Auckland Port north, an alternative has emerged.
Max Whitehead of the Whitehead Group says we should be looking at an underwater tunnel in the Hauraki Gulf, between Motutapu and Rangitoto Islands.
He bases it off a design by international ports consultant Raoul Borley - who's idea is currently under construction in Norway.
He says it would clear traffic congestion, allow workers to keep their jobs, reduce time to transfer goods and perhaps most importantly cost a third of the price - $4 billion compared to $12 billion.
Max Whitehead joined Mike Hosking to explain further.
