Nurses nationwide walked off the job today at 7am after rejecting the latest pay offer from the district health boards (DHBs).

No suitable agreement was reached, so the 24-hour strike will proceed.

A woman who has to go in and look after her elderly mother because of the nurses' strike was told she would need to feed and help her use the bathroom due to lack of staff due to the strike.

Maureen Lennon was told to come into Thames hospital with no nursing experience to look after her unwell mother.

She says that the nurses have assured her that there will be assistants around to help.

"The charge nurse gave me a briefing, and they seem to have some good contingency plans in place."
