Fish and Game is calling for the government to curb tourism in the South Island.

High volumes of tourists to the south are affecting our rivers and landscapes.

Chief Executive Martin Taylor told Mike Hosking something needs to be done.

Taylor says tourists should pay for the facilities they use.

"We're not saying stop tourists, what we're saying is at least put a cap on it until we have the infrastructure in play. Once you've got the infrastructure in play, then you can ramp up the numbers."
