Victims' advocate calls for abuse inquiry to continue

A victims' advocate says it's important the inquiry into abuse in care continues successfully, even though its chair is stepping down.

Sir Anand Satyanand has resigned because the Royal Commission will take years longer than first thought.

Maggy Tai Rakena is the manager of sexual violence service Start. She told Mike Hosking it's important the inquiry finds answers.

"The abuse hasn't stopped and unless the inquiry find out what's gone on before, there's no chance of changing the future.

“Australia has done a fine job with its Royal Commission, and New Zealand can too.”

Rakena says change is difficult because people who've been traumatised need consistency and predictability.

“However, I doesn't think the whole thing will fall over just because Sir Anand has resigned.”
