The tourist sector is reeling at how long it will be before international tourists can return.

Treasury is predicting New Zealand's border won't be fully open until 2022, basing its forecast on the assumption all border restrictions are lifted by the start of 2022.

Tourism Export Council chief executive Lynda Keene told Mike Hosking the organisation was shocked by that, saying they felt physically felt sick.

Lynda Keene says there's still no international tourism recovery plan, despite asking the Government for it for many months.

She says inbound operators plan a year or two in advance, so need guidance and dates from the Government to help businesses recover.
