Oranga Tamariki facing calls for Royal Commission

Investigations into how children are taken from their families by the state are multiplying rapidly, but it's not enough for some campaigners.

The Chief Ombudsman is the latest to launch an investigation, joining both Oranga Tamariki and the Children's Commissioner.

It joins Oranga Tamariki, which is conducting its own inquiry, as well as the Children's Commissioner, whose review will focus on Māori newborns.

It's after the highly publicised attempt to take a newborn from its mother at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

Whanau First advocate Louise Hutchinson is continuing their call for a full, independent Royal Commission of inquiry into all uplifts.

"We know we have problems with violence in this country, we're not disputing that.
We know there are children who aren't a safe and there needs to be a process, but our issue is with how it's being done."

She told Mike Hosking that it's the only way to fully examine the state of the department.

"We're aware of a sick, bullying culture that exists within this government department, and until that is exposed, New Zealanders aren't going to believe what's happening."
