Simple solutions to problems with bail have given our stressed prison network some relief.

There are 600 fewer inmates now than there were six months ago, and the population is 1000 people below the department's projection.

Corrections deputy national commissioner Leigh Marsh says some of the changes have been simple.

He told Mike Hosking they found about 70 percent of electronically monitored bail applications were failing on the first attempt.

"It was literally as basic as providing support to defendants to not only fill the form in, because there are potentially literacy issues, but also give them access to some of that information so access to family contacts."
