How to survive family drama at Christmas

At this time of year, family and friends all get together to celebrate the festive season.

But as with every gathering, there's probably one or two family members you're not that keen to see.

So how do you deal with the awkward small talk and potential tension?

Clinical psychologist Karen Nimmo told Mike Yardley says that the reality for many people is that Christmas is not a happy time.

“The trouble with families is we all know how to push people’s buttons. A single comment can send you back to that sad eight-year-old or that angry 14-year-old.”

Nimmo says that people should bring the attitude and not show up as the Christmas Grinch.

“That will stop you from having a good day as well as everyone else around you.”

She says that, if you know it’s going to be a problem, limit your start or end time.

“If you can’t do that, if you’re the host, get outside and have a walk or have a break at some point.”

Nimmo also warns to avoid the alcohol, or those for who it is a problem.
