An Australian high school is determined to scrap waste once and for all.

At the beginning of next week, Melbourne Girls' College will remove all bins from the school grounds in an attempt towards achieving zero waste.

Students will have to take all rubbish from their lunches home at the end of the day.

Melbourne Girls' Principal Karen Money told Mike Hosking there's more it than simply reducing the number of chip packets.

She it's a step towards reducing climate change which is having a big impact on the mental health of young people.

"It sends a strong message. It's about educating people and setting an example and that's part of the reason we are implementing this."
