Primary school teachers and principals are divided on whether to accept the Government's latest pay offer, as they begin to vote on the deal.

Teachers and principals at primary schools and area schools will be able to vote until next Tuesday, with results due by the end of the week.

The Government is putting an extra $217 million into the revised deal, making it now worth more than $1.4 billion.

Kahli Oliver, a teacher at Auckland's Gladstone Primary School, told Mike Hosking she rejected the last offer but will support this one.

"I've been teaching 20 years. My pay packet will significantly increase. It makes me think the Government are going to invest in teaching.

"We have an accord in that agreement to work together on class sizes and and on workload.

"Also, those eight call back days that we no longer have to do in our holidays. It's a huge step in the right direction."

However, Auckland Primary Principals' Association president Craig Holt said many principals won't be voting in favour of their pay offer.

"The majority of principals I've spoken to over the past few days weren't overly impressed with the offer.

"It basically hasn't shifted from the offer a few months ago."

NZEI  president Lynda Stuart said it is important union members have time to make their own decisions.

"We've had the opportunity for our members to have conversations in their staff room and with their colleagues, to find out a bit more about it."

"We've given the information out, the members will make their decisions, and we will see whether or not they accept or reject the offer."

Secondary teachers will vote next week, following face-to-face talks with their union, the PPTA.
