Moves are being made to tackle sexual violence at the country's universities.

A three-year partnership has been signed between the New Zealand Union of Students' Associations and ACC to combat 'rape culture' at universities.

Help Executive Director Kathryn Phillips said people aged between 16 and 24 are particularly vulnerable.

Ms Phillips said alcohol only adds fuel to the fire, and something needs to be done.

"Teaching people that it's illegal to actually have sex with somebody who is passed out because they're drunk or so drunk that they're not able to give consent."

Union president Jonathan Gee told Mike Hosking work also has to be done outside of this.

"Tertiary communities - there's an opportunity there to educate students in terms of healthy relationships and consent education, and particularly within that first-year experience through halls of residence."
