A security expert says online chatter can increase close to significant dates.
Police are investigating after a threat to Christchurch mosques was made online, nearly a year on from the attacks.
Massey University security expert John Battersby told Mike Hosking for some people the internet is how people express their desire to horrify and disgust us - and the reaction is what they're looking for.
"They like to look for ways to express what they want to say anonymously - and they're likely to get a bigger audience as big dates approach."
Battersby says this was more about getting a reaction than anything else.
"I wouldn't belittle it - it's there the police will investigate it, but IÂ wouldn't have made any media publicity about it."
