Councils interested in Airbnb bed tax

Other councils are taking a keen interest in Auckland's bed tax.

Mayor Phil Goff has announced the targeted rate will be extended to include Airbnb.

Queenstown Lakes District Mayor Jim Boult told Mike Hosking it's about time.

"Airbnb is pretty fond they are there for the rights of mum and dad, but the reality is they are a major corporate conglomerate and they need to pay their way."

However, Boult says it would be fairer for the tax to come from government, and be passed through to councils.

Earlier, Boult told ZB he appreciates the service they provide but wants them to abide by council bylaws.

"At times they paint themselves as being a little outfit that looks after the interests of kiwi bach owners, that's not the case because they are a multinational conglomerate."

He says what Auckland Council suggests is really a differential rate.

"We don't think that that is fair, not fair on the accommodation providers and it doesn't raise nearly enough money."

Boult says a pass-through bed tax, such as that paid by people staying in a hotel, is a far fairer model.
