The Government has announced regulations that will be introduced in parliament today that they say will help smokers quit while not encouraging new users.

It means that people will need to be 18 to buy a vape, smokefree areas will also become vape free areas, and stores can't advertise the products.

Dairies can only stock tobacco, menthol and mint flavours, with all other flavours available only in R18 specialty stores.

Associate health minister Jenny Salesa told Mike Hosking that working out a bill that would prevent children from buying the products while not making it harder for people to quit smoking.

"It's taken us close to 15 and 18 months to get this legislation through. This is an example of where our Government has come through to regulate an area the last government should have regulated."

She has appealed to parliamentary colleagues to expedite the legislation so it can go through Parliament before the election.
