There are hopes our avocado industry will have the upper hand over South America when it comes to the quality of our supply chain.
Our exclusive export market for avocados in Australia looks to be under threat now that Mexico, Peru and Chile are showing interest.
New Zealand's sole access to the market could come to an end after the CPTPP was signed in March.
New Zealand Avocado CEO Jen Scoular told Mike Hosking we could have some stiff competition.
"South American countries grow great avocados, we would be stronger on the ethical and environmental supply chain than they are."
She says the industry knew it couldn't rely on Australia forever and has a back-up plan in place.
"We were lucky to secure primary growth partnerships four years ago and part of that was developing out Asian markets."
