Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says she is leaving it up to the GCSB to make any final decision on Huawei.

United Kingdom intelligence agencies have given the Chinese electronics company clearance to be involved in Britain's 5G networks.

That's despite the US accusing Huawei of conducting surveillance on China's behalf.

Speaking with Mike Hosking Jacinda Ardern said, Huawei's role in New Zealand is a matter between the GCSB and Spark.

"The GCSB have gone back to Spark and said there are some concerns here [and] it is now up to you to mitigate, so that's where we are up to in New Zealand."

She said politics aren't involved in this decision.

"We have an independent process and for good reason - we have to protect our own national interest, our own data security for New Zealanders and, of course, we maintain an independent foreign policy."

Spark has been seeking permission to use Huawei equipment in its 5G network.

When asked whether she knew what the GCSB's issue with Spark's request was, Ardern said she didn't discuss "national security issues".

"I do not discuss national security issues, including what I do or don't know."

However, she said the UK is in a different position to New Zealand when it comes to Huawei.
