The government is rejecting a suggestion of 'no jab, no pay' to combat the measles outbreak.

Nearly 1000 people have now contracted the disease.

174,000 more people have been immunised in Australia since its government started penalising beneficiaries if their children weren't vaccinated.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern told Mike Hosking the 'no jab, no pay' policy doesn't capture the whole of society.

She says the immunisation rates have risen in the past by using the approach the government is using now, which is to make sure people have the information and access they need.

"The government is taking the outbreak seriously, and we are responding with tangible things that will actually make a difference."
