A Government apology to the Pike River mine families looks increasingly likely.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says there were a number of failings following the disaster that claimed 29 lives.

However, speaking with Mike Hosking, Ardern said they are focusing on getting into the mine, then they will consider an apology.

"Getting back into the drift, doing that work - that comes first. But then I do think there will be a time when it is worth considering that apology and it being the right thing to do."
