Many New Zealanders unwittingly have their retirement funds invested in weapons.

Only 16 out of the 254 KiwiSaver funds are weapons free.

Simplicity managing director, Sam Stubbs, told Mike Hosking many Kiwis simply don't know where their savings are invested.

"Things like nuclear weapons, guns, pornographer, gaming and gambling, if you ask people if they want their money invested in these things they will say no, but if you ask them do they know [if it is] the answer is also no."

"You can find out pretty easily by asking your provider if they are invested in these types of things, they will have a stock standard set of answers...you can also go online to one or two websites."

In terms of returns, Stubbs said guns used to be big returners but that has been taken over by technology stocks.

"These companies have gone from being fantastic earners for investors to very, very poor."
