National MP Mark Mitchell has denied any plans of challenging Simon Bridges' as leader of the National Party.

Mitchell was asked on his regular Wednesday morning slot on Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking Breakfast.

The National MP told Mike Hosking he has full faith in Simon Bridges.

However, the Police Minister Stuart Nash seemed thrilled by the idea, saying Mitchell is the "only person" who would cut it.

"Simon is in trouble. He's a nice guy, there's no doubt about that, but he's just not cut out for leadership," he said.

"When I look across the aisle, Judith Collins wouldn't cut it, the only person who I see on that front bench is Mark Mitchell."

However, Nash had his reservations, saying he would prefer if Mark Mitchell wasn't the leader because he has "the best chance of toppling us".

"I'm quite keen on this Government gig. He would worry me."

"He's got this sort of John Key touch. He's got a good back story, he's a nice guy, he would go around the country telling stories, he would smile and everyone would like him. You can't say the same about Judith can you," he said.

Mark Mitchell said he appreciated the support but is standing by Simon Bridges.

"We are going to give him [Simon Bridges] right through until the election. We are 100 per cent behind him, we have been through our leadership debate."

"He has shown a lot of resilience. He handled some very difficult situations last year. The caucus is locked in behind him. We are focused on being a good opposition...and showing that we are ready to govern in 2020."

He then voiced his concern that Stuart Nash was about to "ask him on a date".

"Nashie has so many nice things to say about me, he's had so many good things to say to me over the last few months, I keep wondering whether he is going to ask me on a date or something like that."

"I'm getting a bit worried about Nashie," he joked.

However, he said the National Party wasn't going to "fall into the same trap as Labour".

Stuart Nash fired back saying he is quite happy with the way things are.

"I'm happy with Simon the way he is. He's polling down. The last time we [Labour] changed a leader we went from 24 per cent to 37 per cent."

The latest Newshub Reid Research Poll shows National has nosedived to its worst result in more than a decade.

The poll placed National on only 41.6 per cent while Labour was on 47.5 per cent.

Polling on the preferred prime minister had Jacinda Ardern far ahead again on 41.8 per cent.

Bridges only had 5 per cent of the vote while Judith Collins overtook him on 6.2 per cent.

Stuart Nash told Mike Hosking it's a positive result which shows Jacinda Ardern is resonating with New Zealanders.

"She's genuine, she did a fantastic job representing us overseas and there is a good feeling out there."

However, Mitchell said the poll was taken a month ago and didn't include the Government removing KiwiBuild targets or other relavent announcements and changes.
