New Zealand’s first medal in the Tokyo Olympics has come courtesy of 23-year-old Hayden Wilde in the triathlon.
It was an emotional moment for the Whakatāne athlete, who dedicated the win to his late father.
His family were equally as happy, watching on from the Whakatāne Sportfishing Club, and Hayden’s brother Hamish told Mike Hosking he was always hopeful of a medal chance, but to see it happen was still a thrill.
“Thinking and knowing is too different things, you hope it's cause he's your brother but you don't expect it."
