The more cops deployed to monitor Auckland's northern border, the fewer left to deal with crime around the country.

Our newsroom understands about 300 cops will be used to staff border checkpoints, during the surge of domestic travel expected after Auckland's border lifts.

They won't just be from Auckland and Northland, but will be deployed from around the country.

Hamish Piercy, former Deputy Director of Road Policing at Canterbury Police told Mike Hosking it's likely to put extra pressure on already stretched police teams.

“300 officers manning a border is a lot of resources to take off the streets and other duties, it’s not going to be a great position for police officers to be in.”

Police have opted to only do spot checks on people travelling across Auckland's southern border.
