Low-vaccinated parts of the country are bracing for extra Covid restrictions, when the traffic light system takes effect on Friday.

Cabinet will meet this afternoon to determine which parts of the country will be at what level.

Auckland and any other areas with high case numbers or low vaccination rates will move to the Red Level, while other parts of the country will move to the Orange Level.

Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz told Mike Hosking  Tairāwhiti is set to move to Red, forcing the cancellation of events like Rhythm and Vines.

“We all want the summer we always have, so the fact that we will be moving into red today will bring some limitations.”

On the other side of the North Island, Whanganui Mayor Hamish McDouall told Mike Hosking he's expecting the same news.

"That’s the chatter that’s going around, and our vaccination rates tanked a little bit, so I feel we will start off as red.”
