The Northern Explorer will be back on track by Christmas.
The train service, which runs between Auckland and Wellington, was paused indefinitely on March 22 due to Covid-19.
Kiwirail CEO Greg Miller told Mike Hosking they want to play their part in the economic recovery.
"The rail tourism business is unique, placing 300 or 400 people in towns or cities everyday, that's 300 or 400 hotels or restaurants filled."
The Tranz Alpine returned to service three weeks ago, and the Coastal Pacific will be back in Spring.
