New Zealand cricket coach Gary Stead has pointed to one key factor in his side's five-wicket loss to Pakistan at cricket's Twenty20 World Cup in Sharjah.

Their opponents reached the 135-run target with eight balls to spare.

Stead outlined the difference on the Mike Hosking Breakfast.

“We were probably 10 or 15 short of what we would have liked on that wicket and I thought we fought hard to get them back in but Haseeb Ali came in and scored 27 off 12, he was the only guy in both teams to be able to do that and it was probably the difference in the game.”

The Blackcaps lost four wickets for 18 runs in the final four overs of their innings - Daryl Mitchell and Devon Conway each made 27 to top score.
