Disability support providers want the government to deliver on its promise of 'enabling good lives' for the disabled.
A report from New Zealand Disability Support Network says the current funding is stretched too thin and families and carers are having to pick up the slack.
It estimates a $500 million funding shortfall, and it's thought around 15,000 families are eligible for disability services, but aren't on the books.
Chief executive Garth Bennie told Mike Hosking the system is at breaking point.
"We've reached a point where the gaps are so significant and disabled people and their families are certainly not getting what they need, and providers are having to bear the cost of that."
He says every level of the system is in crisis.Â
"The current system has become very effective at suppressing and hiding need and lowering expectations of disabled people. They fund organisations far less than the actual cost of providing services."
