Experts are calling for New Zealand to get it right the first time when it comes to regulating cannabis products.

A world first study by the global drug survey has found that labels on cannabis products could be a good way to educate potential users and change their behaviour.

It also found that almost 59 per cent of people would be happy to see health messages on the products.

Global Drug Survey lead researcher, Adam Winstock, told Mike Hosking the alcohol industry's got away without warning labels for years, but this can't happen with cannabis.

"It's also an opportunity for the cannabis industry to be upfront and transparent about the fact that its products can cause harm."
