The Conservation Minister says new white-baiting regulations will mean people can keep enjoying a fritter for many years to come.
The Government's proposing standardising when and how to whitebait across the country and to phase out exports.
Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage old Tim Dower the changes are about creating a sustainable population of these at-risk native fish.
'We do need some safe havens for whitebait where they can breed without the pressures of dirty water and the obstructions of streams."
Eugenie Sage says they're not trying to spoil people's fun, the changes are about a sustainable, long term fisheries population.
"We don't want people tucking into their whitebait, thinking they're eating an endangered species."
