Calls for the Government to ease building restrictions if we want even a chance of fixing the housing crisis.

A report from the New Zealand Initiative shows population growth will require an extra 30-thousand homes per year.

That's before figuring in demolition rates and the $40,000 homes we're already behind on.

Think tank chief economist Eric Crampton told Mike Hosking decades of building restrictions have caused the construction sector to adapt and reduce its capacity.

"If everyone knew that it would be easy to get supplies and councils would be welcoming, the sector would start taking on more trainees and gearing up for the job to come."
