A free speech advocate says it's disappointing a philosopher has been barred from talking at SkyCity.

Controversial Australia philosopher Peter Singer is being forced to find another Auckland venue for his speaking tour, after his June event was cancelled.

Singer's been criticised over his view it could be ethical for parents to euthanise a severely disabled newborn.

Free Speech Coalition member Eric Crampton told Mike Hosking Singer is one of the world's leading philosophers.

"He's the world's foremost utilitarian, which means he cares deeply about making sure the lived experience of people on the planet is as good as it can be."

Crampton says Singer wants people's lives to be the best they can be.

"It's disappointing we are not going to be able to have that type of discussion in Auckland."

Meanwhile, Peter Singer says he's already been offered another Auckland venue for his speaking tour in June.

He's tweeted he's looking forward to speaking about effective altruism in New Zealand.
